A new report says the United States has become one of the top destinations for laundering dirty money through real estate.
Why?
Because real estate can move large amounts of money into a stable asset.
Buy a property through a company. Hide who really owns it. Park money in real estate.
That is why federal regulators have been increasing scrutiny on all-cash purchases, shell companies, and luxury real estate transactions in certain markets.
Now, this is not your average Connecticut homebuyer.
Most of this activity happens in higher-end markets and involves complex ownership structures.
But it raises a bigger question:
How much of the housing market is driven by people looking for a place to live… and how much is driven by people looking for a place to park money?
That is one reason housing has become such a national conversation.
When housing functions as both shelter and an investment vehicle, affordability becomes a much bigger challenge.
Do investors help the housing market or make it harder for regular buyers?
